Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past going back to the era of the Romans, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins uncovered nearby show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered denote that they were inhabiting the locale very likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was is not cited till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a substantially larger area than just the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added on prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the following generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's seen accelerated development in the past few decades.
