Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace close to 37,000 and a history stretching back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands near the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage discovered in close proximity offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed mean that they were settling the vicinity probably since the sixth century. The commune as it was then was not reported till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a considerably greater area compared to the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get appended till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the coming years and the development of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town that's seen increased development in the last few years.
