Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it can be found very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins unearthed in the area give proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were living in the vicinity in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time isn't mentioned till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a much bigger area compared to the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put on till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the ensuing generations and the development of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past several years.
