Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a history going back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is situated near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins discovered in the area show proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled upon reveal that they were settling the region undoubtedly since the sixth century. The commune existing at that time was not discussed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a significantly wider area than only the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get inserted prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the following decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town which has seen greater development in recent years.
