Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to Roman times, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located very close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market in around the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon show that they were residing in the neighbourhood in all likelihood from the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't discussed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a much wider area than simply the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could perhaps have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be inserted before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
