Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is placed near the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage picked up in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood most likely from the sixth century. The village as such isn't discussed until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a lot greater area than simply the town alone, and included the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be added until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the ensuing years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
