The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market in about the tenth century, and antiquities picked up reveal that they were dwelling in the area probably since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time isn't referred to until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a far wider area than only the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name might possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't appended until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
