Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity give proof of this. The early Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who created the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were residing in the local area quite possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then was not described till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a lot wider area than only the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't applied till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the coming years and the development of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has seen improved development in recent years.
