The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were residing in the area possibly from the 6th Century. The village as such was not remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a substantially bigger area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be included before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
