Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace close to 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins uncovered near by offer evidence of this. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market in about the 10th Century, and relics unearthed mean that they were settling the neighbourhood in all probability from the sixth century. The settlement existing then isn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a considerably bigger area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not included till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
