Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman times, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies near the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage discovered nearby give evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and relics picked up show that they were inhabiting the area quite likely since the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time was not reported till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a far larger area than only the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be inserted prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the following decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the last few years.
