Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins unearthed nearby give evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts found denote that they were inhabiting the local area perhaps since the sixth century. The commune as it was then isn't cited until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a lot wider area than just the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could very well have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be put on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing through the succeeding years and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has witnessed improved development in recent times.
