Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to Roman times, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins stumbled on nearby offer evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered show that they were settling the region in all likelihood since the sixth century. The village as it was then wasn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a lot bigger area than just the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't appended up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the ensuing years and the development of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
