Located in the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman era, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old relics and coinage picked up nearby offer proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities found reveal that they were residing in the area in all probability from the 6th Century. The commune as it was was not referred to till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a way bigger area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the ensuing decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town which has witnessed greater development in the past few years.
