Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a story going back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found next to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins found in the area show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used the market place in around the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were settling the area quite possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as such was not cited until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a way bigger area than just the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town that has witnessed improved development in recent years.
