Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historical past extending back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage discovered near by show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the local area undoubtedly since the sixth century. The commune existing then isn't discussed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a way larger area compared to the town by itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not appended till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the coming generations and the establishing of of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town that's seen greater development in recent times.
