Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the Roman era, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage picked up nearby give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered imply that they were inhabiting the locale in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The commune as such is not cited until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a far greater area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get inserted prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the coming decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town which has seen improved development in the past few decades.
