Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it sits very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins stumbled upon in the area show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the area most likely from the sixth century. The village as such was not documented until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a much greater area than simply the town itself, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be inserted before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the coming years and the building of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's seen accelerated development in current times.
