Located in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a story going back to Roman times, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage picked up nearby give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market during the tenth century, and relics found show that they were residing in the local area most probably since the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't listed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a way larger area than simply the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not applied prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the succeeding years and the coming of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town that's witnessed improved development in the recent past.
