The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a considerably greater area than simply the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get applied prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
