Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a story stretching back to Roman days, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed very close to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage stumbled on nearby show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who were using a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered reveal that they were inhabiting the vicinity very likely from the sixth century. The village as such isn't observed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a considerably greater area than simply the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put in until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve.
