Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lies very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage picked up in the area offer proof of this. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up show that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then wasn't described till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a lot bigger area compared to the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't put on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the following generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town which has seen accelerated development in the recent past.
