Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage going back to Roman days, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old relics and coins picked up near by offer proof of this. The age old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place in around the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the vicinity in all likelihood from the sixth century. The village existing at this time isn't observed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a significantly wider area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be appended prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the coming decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's witnessed accelerated development in recent years.
