Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a story extending back to the Roman era, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage picked up nearby show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were inhabiting the area quite possibly since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time isn't listed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a substantially greater area than merely the town itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get added prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the coming years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a booming market town that's seen improved development in modern times.
