The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed the market place during the 10th Century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were settling the region in all likelihood since the sixth century. The village as it was was not listed until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a substantially greater area than just the town alone, and included the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
