Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to the Roman era, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there had been settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins stumbled upon in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market during the tenth century, and artifacts discovered reveal that they were residing in the locale probably since the sixth century. The village as such isn't referred to until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a significantly larger area compared to the town alone, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get put on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the succeeding generations and the construction of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town which has seen greater development in the recent past.
