Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past going back to Roman times, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage unearthed near by give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who developed the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the area most probably since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't listed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a lot larger area compared to the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't inserted before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the ensuing generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that has witnessed increased development in recent years.
