Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county border betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman period, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies near the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins unearthed in close proximity offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market during the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were residing in the locale in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not discussed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a lot bigger area than merely the town alone, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not appended until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
