Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lays very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins picked up in close proximity give proof of this. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market during the tenth century, and artefacts found show that they were inhabiting the area probably from the 6th Century. The commune as such was not cited till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a far bigger area than simply the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the coming generations and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town that's witnessed increased development in the last few years.
