Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history extending back to Roman days, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it can be found near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market during the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were staying in the vicinity most likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was is not reported until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a much wider area compared to the town alone, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be inserted up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
