Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story harping back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins stumbled upon in the area offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were living in the region undoubtedly from the sixth century. The commune as it was then isn't described till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a far bigger area than merely the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't appended prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the following decades and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town which has seen increased development in the past few years.
