Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman days, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lies near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage found nearby give proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were staying in the area in all likelihood since the sixth century. The commune as it was is not referred to until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a far greater area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added on up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the ensuing years and the development of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that's witnessed increased development in the recent past.
