Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a story stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage stumbled on in close proximity show proof of this. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up show that they were inhabiting the local area very likely from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then isn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a much greater area than just the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get included till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the succeeding decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has witnessed increased development in recent times.
