Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a story harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins unearthed in close proximity show evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed a market in about the 10th Century, and relics picked up suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood in all probability from the 6th Century. The village existing then wasn't remarked upon until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a way greater area than only the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get inserted till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the succeeding generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
