Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins stumbled upon near by show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered imply that they were living in the local area in all probability from the sixth century. The village as it was then was not discussed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a substantially greater area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the ensuing decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town which has seen increased development in modern times.
