Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity offer proof of this. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were residing in the area most probably since the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time isn't mentioned until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a far greater area compared to the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be put in up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the coming decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's witnessed improved development in recent times.
