Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history going back to Roman days, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it stands very close to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins uncovered nearby offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood undoubtedly since the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time wasn't listed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a far greater area than merely the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be appended till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the ensuing decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town that has seen improved development in current times.
