Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a historical past extending back to Roman times, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is placed near the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coinage discovered in the area show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts found suggest that they were residing in the vicinity most probably since the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time is not referred to until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a way wider area than merely the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the coming generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has witnessed increased development in the past several years.
