The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were settling the local area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The commune as such was not discussed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a far larger area than simply the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't applied till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
