Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the Roman era, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found close to the Chilterns and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old relics and coinage stumbled on in the area show evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics picked up suggest that they were residing in the local area most probably from the sixth century. The commune as such isn't referred to until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a significantly bigger area than just the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may likely have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing through the succeeding decades and the construction of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has witnessed improved development in the recent past.
