Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins found in the area show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up show that they were residing in the region possibly from the 6th Century. The village as it was was not listed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a far bigger area than only the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be added before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the ensuing years and the development of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town which has seen improved development in current times.
