Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated next to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early relics and coinage uncovered nearby offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who developed the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were settling the locale most probably since the sixth century. The commune as such isn't cited until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a far wider area than only the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the coming years and the development of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen increased development in recent times.
