Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins picked up in the area offer evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the region undoubtedly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a way wider area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be appended up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve.
