Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a story extending back to the Roman era, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage uncovered in the area offer proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place during the tenth century, and relics stumbled on indicate that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time was not referred to until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a far greater area compared to the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put on up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the ensuing decades and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town that has witnessed improved development in the recent past.
