Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman era, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found near the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins stumbled on nearby show proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who introduced the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered reveal that they were staying in the vicinity quite possibly since the 6th Century. The commune as such wasn't referred to till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a way bigger area than simply the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be applied before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the coming years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town which has witnessed increased development in the past several years.
