Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a historical past extending back to Roman days, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage stumbled upon nearby show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed reveal that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood quite possibly since the sixth century. The settlement existing then is not discussed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a significantly greater area than just the town alone, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
