Found in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history extending back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits very close to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins stumbled upon near by offer proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood possibly since the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't observed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a far greater area than only the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be appended up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the coming generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town which has seen improved development in recent years.
