Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage picked up nearby give evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market during the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered reveal that they were settling the region in all probability from the sixth century. The commune as such was not discussed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a way bigger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name could very well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get inserted prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the ensuing years and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen accelerated development in current times.
