Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a history going back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage picked up near by offer proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the local area very likely from the 6th Century. The commune as it was isn't remarked upon until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a way greater area than only the town itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be added before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the following years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's seen improved development in recent years.
