Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the times of the Romans, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins found in the area offer evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up mean that they were inhabiting the region more than likely from the sixth century. The village as it was then is not mentioned till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a significantly greater area than just the town by itself, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't put in prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the following years and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen accelerated development in the past few decades.
