Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is located next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early relics and coinage uncovered in the area offer proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts discovered show that they were residing in the area most likely from the sixth century. The settlement as such is not discussed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a much greater area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be added prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
