Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a story stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts found show that they were inhabiting the region most probably from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then is not reported until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a way greater area than only the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put in up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the coming decades and the building of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has seen increased development in the past few years.
