The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early relics and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood undoubtedly since the sixth century. The commune existing at that time isn't observed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a significantly bigger area than just the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put in prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
