Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historical past stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the tenth century, and relics stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the region perhaps from the sixth century. The commune as such is not mentioned until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a way larger area than merely the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be inserted until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the coming years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's witnessed greater development in modern times.
