Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to the era of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it sits close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins uncovered in close proximity show evidence of this. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who created the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts picked up show that they were dwelling in the region very likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a substantially bigger area than simply the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get appended up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the succeeding years and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen greater development in modern times.
