Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past going back to Roman days, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage discovered nearby show proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who introduced a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities discovered reveal that they were living in the vicinity perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a much larger area than simply the town by itself, and included the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be applied prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the following decades and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has witnessed accelerated development in recent years.
