Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is situated near to the Chilterns and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins discovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were residing in the area most probably since the sixth century. The village as it was then is not referred to till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a substantially greater area compared to the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could possibly have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be inserted till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the ensuing years and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
