Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past stretching back to Roman days, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found near the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old relics and coinage discovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon suggest that they were inhabiting the area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not documented until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a far larger area than only the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be applied before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
