Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman period, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage stumbled on near by offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were settling the vicinity in all probability since the 6th Century. The village as such is not listed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a substantially larger area compared to the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could quite possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be added up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the coming years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's seen increased development in the last few years.
