Found in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins found in the area show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities discovered show that they were residing in the vicinity more than likely from the sixth century. The village as such isn't referred to till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a far bigger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could perhaps have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put in before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the succeeding generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a blooming market town which has witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
