Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past extending back to Roman times, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins discovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who used the market place in about the tenth century, and relics discovered denote that they were inhabiting the local area probably since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time is not referred to till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a substantially bigger area than just the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't put on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding during the coming decades and the building of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town that's witnessed increased development in the recent past.
