Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past going back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins discovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood almost certainly from the 6th Century. The commune existing then isn't referred to until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a far bigger area than merely the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town that has seen increased development in modern times.
