Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a past stretching back to Roman days, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands very close to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage discovered in close proximity offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled on indicate that they were residing in the vicinity quite possibly from the sixth century. The commune as it was then wasn't listed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a substantially bigger area than only the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get included up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the ensuing years and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has witnessed greater development in recent times.
