Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the times of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated near the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins uncovered in the area give evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up reveal that they were residing in the vicinity quite possibly from the sixth century. The commune as it was wasn't observed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a way bigger area than merely the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will probably have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added on before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
