Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county border in between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to Roman days, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits near to the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old relics and coins stumbled upon in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon indicate that they were inhabiting the area almost certainly from the sixth century. The commune existing then was not mentioned till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a lot bigger area compared to the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not added on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the coming decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has seen improved development in the past few years.
