Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage discovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts found show that they were residing in the area perhaps since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then is not discussed until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a far wider area than just the town itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't inserted prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the following decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
