Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage stumbled on nearby give proof of this. The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were living in the neighbourhood possibly from the sixth century. The village as it was is not cited until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a considerably wider area than only the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the succeeding years and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that has seen increased development in the last few years.
