Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a historic past going back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it stands near the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins stumbled on in close proximity give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on mean that they were dwelling in the vicinity more than likely since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't cited till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a far wider area than merely the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will probably have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be put on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the following decades and the building of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has seen increased development in the last few years.
