Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the era of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is located close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage found in the area show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were residing in the locale most probably from the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not described till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a significantly larger area than simply the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be included prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding during the following generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a booming market town which has witnessed accelerated development in recent years.
