Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it lies next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins stumbled upon nearby show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities found suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood perhaps since the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't discussed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a far bigger area than only the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not applied till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the ensuing decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that has witnessed accelerated development in modern times.
