Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a history extending back to Roman days, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity show evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood more than likely from the sixth century. The village existing then is not reported until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a way larger area than merely the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get put on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the succeeding decades and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has seen accelerated development in modern times.
