Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical relics and coins stumbled upon in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were settling the local area in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The commune as such isn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a significantly greater area than only the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not added prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the following generations and the construction of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town that's seen improved development in current times.
