Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman era, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins uncovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the area possibly from the 6th Century. The village as such isn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a far larger area than only the town by itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not put in till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the following generations and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town that has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
