Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the Roman era, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies next to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins picked up near by show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who created the market place during the tenth century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity in all probability from the 6th Century. The village as such is not referred to until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a far bigger area than just the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get added on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the ensuing generations and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that's witnessed greater development in recent times.
