Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history stretching back to the Roman era, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated close to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins found nearby give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities found show that they were residing in the region perhaps since the 6th Century. The village as it was wasn't remarked upon till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a substantially larger area than only the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't appended till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing through the following years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve.
