Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a story harping back to the days of the Romans, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins stumbled upon in the area offer proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in around the tenth century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were living in the local area quite possibly since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time is not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a significantly wider area than only the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't added on till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
