Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to the Roman era, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage picked up nearby show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who created the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were staying in the local area in all likelihood from the sixth century. The village existing at this time was not discussed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a considerably wider area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't applied before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the following decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a booming market town that has seen accelerated development in recent years.
