Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the border between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the era of the Romans, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage found nearby show proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood perhaps since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was isn't reported until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a far bigger area compared to the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name will have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the ensuing generations and the arrival of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand.
