Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the Roman era, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies next to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage stumbled on in the area offer proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered mean that they were inhabiting the area undoubtedly since the sixth century. The commune existing at that time wasn't listed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a considerably greater area than simply the town itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not included before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's seen increased development in modern times.
