Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins uncovered in the area show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts found show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood almost certainly from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time isn't referred to until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a lot greater area compared to the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be applied prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
