Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic relics and coins unearthed in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts picked up indicate that they were staying in the local area probably from the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't reported until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a way bigger area than only the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will probably have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be put on before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the following years and the coming of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town which has witnessed increased development in the past several years.
