Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story harping back to the Roman period, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage found nearby show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts discovered show that they were residing in the region possibly from the sixth century. The village existing then isn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a much wider area compared to the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger over the following generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has witnessed greater development in recent years.
