Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early relics and coinage uncovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who created the market place in about the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the local area quite likely from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then is not observed until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a substantially larger area than simply the town alone, and contained the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't included till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the coming years and the construction of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town that has witnessed greater development in the past several years.
