Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman era, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it sits next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage discovered in the area give proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed denote that they were settling the locale almost certainly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not observed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a lot wider area than simply the town itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be included until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the coming generations and the coming of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen increased development in the last few years.
