Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a history going back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old relics and coinage uncovered in the area offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts picked up show that they were residing in the region most likely from the sixth century. The village as it was is not described until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a far larger area compared to the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be put on before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the coming generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that's seen improved development in current times.
