Found in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman era, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage stumbled on in the area show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market in about the 10th Century, and relics picked up suggest that they were settling the area probably from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time is not discussed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a much greater area compared to the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be put in until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
