Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early relics and coinage found in the area offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time wasn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a considerably wider area than merely the town itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be added on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the succeeding generations and the coming of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has witnessed greater development in recent times.
