Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage stumbled upon near by show evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood possibly from the 6th Century. The village existing then is not reported till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a much bigger area compared to the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get appended prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the ensuing generations and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
