Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins found in the area give evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics discovered show that they were settling the area almost certainly from the sixth century. The settlement as such wasn't mentioned until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a way larger area than merely the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will probably have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be added on till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
