Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old relics and coins unearthed in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood quite likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was then is not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a lot bigger area than merely the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the coming years and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town that has witnessed increased development in the recent past.
