Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage uncovered near by show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts found suggest that they were settling the local area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't described until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a lot larger area than simply the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be included up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the coming generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town which has seen accelerated development in modern times.
