Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a past extending back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage stumbled on nearby give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market during the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the region quite possibly since the sixth century. The commune existing at that time isn't remarked upon until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a substantially greater area than only the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be applied till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's witnessed improved development in recent times.
