Located in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the days of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage stumbled upon nearby offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the region quite likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't remarked upon till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a significantly bigger area compared to the town alone, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get put on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the succeeding decades and the development of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town that's seen improved development in the recent past.
