Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to Roman times, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins discovered near by give proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were residing in the area in all probability since the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time is not described until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a much bigger area than only the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get inserted before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the following years and the building of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town which has witnessed increased development in the recent past.
