Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to Roman times, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins picked up near by show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities found indicate that they were inhabiting the local area possibly since the sixth century. The village as such isn't listed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a significantly bigger area compared to the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get put on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the coming decades and the coming of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has seen improved development in current times.
