Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coins stumbled on in the area show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in around the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were inhabiting the area perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not mentioned till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a significantly larger area than merely the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't inserted up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the ensuing generations and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve.
