Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage uncovered near by give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The settlement as it was was not referred to till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a considerably greater area than only the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not included prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
