Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins uncovered near by offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were settling the region in all likelihood from the sixth century. The settlement existing then isn't mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a far larger area compared to the town itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be put on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the succeeding generations and the building of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town which has seen improved development in the past several years.
