Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to Roman times, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market during the tenth century, and relics picked up imply that they were inhabiting the local area probably from the sixth century. The village existing then isn't observed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a substantially bigger area than just the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not inserted till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the ensuing generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has witnessed improved development in the past few years.
