Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed indicate that they were settling the area most probably from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time is not remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a much wider area than simply the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be inserted till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the coming decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop.
