Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a historical past extending back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins discovered near by give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were settling the locale quite likely from the sixth century. The commune as such was not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a way wider area than only the town itself, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not put in till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the ensuing decades and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has seen improved development in the last few years.
