Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman era, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade it is approximately halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage found nearby give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood probably from the 6th Century. The commune existing then is not reported until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a far wider area than merely the town itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be included prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the past few decades.
