Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins found near by show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were staying in the local area in all probability since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time wasn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a significantly bigger area than only the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
