Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman period, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins uncovered in the area show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered mean that they were residing in the area undoubtedly since the sixth century. The settlement as such is not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a way larger area than just the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get applied before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the coming decades and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's witnessed greater development in the last few years.
