Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins uncovered in close proximity give proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market during the tenth century, and antiquities picked up indicate that they were residing in the vicinity probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not cited till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a far greater area compared to the town alone, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be included till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the ensuing years and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has witnessed improved development in the recent past.
