Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to the era of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage uncovered in the area show proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market during the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed indicate that they were inhabiting the region almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village existing then wasn't reported until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a substantially larger area than merely the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name will have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be inserted prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
