Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historical past harping back to the Roman period, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is located near the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage found in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were living in the area most probably since the sixth century. The village existing then was not cited till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a substantially larger area than just the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't added on before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
