Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to Roman days, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies close to the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage discovered in the area offer proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were settling the local area more than likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was then was not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a much greater area compared to the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get included till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the following decades and the construction of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
