Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historical past stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits very close to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins picked up in the area offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics found suggest that they were inhabiting the area perhaps since the 6th Century. The village existing then wasn't remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a way wider area than only the town itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will probably have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get applied till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the ensuing generations and the coming of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has witnessed greater development in modern times.
